A dog, “Leao”, sits for a second consecutive day, next to the grave of her owner, Cristina Maria Cesario Santana, who died in the week’s catastrophic landslides in Brazil, at the cemetery in Teresopolis, near Rio de Janiero, on Jan. 15. Brazilians braced for more rain Saturday, fearing further landslides after walls of muddy water tore through towns and claimed some 550 lives in the country’s worst flood disaster on record.

Katie Cannon says: I think anyone who has ever owned a dog will probably get a lump in his or her throat upon viewing this picture. I know I did. See more from the flooding and landslides in Brazil here. More at link here.

What a terrible tragedy so many lives lost, I feel very badly for those who lost loved ones and pets and their homes. May God bless all who survived and give them the strength to carry on without the ones they lost. There will be many prayers said for all, God bless all and have faith to carry on and get through this awful tragedy.

Through this tragedy pets have suffered as well. Like that poor dog sitting beside the grave of her owner. That is just heart breaking, what is the poor dog going to do without the only person she knew? I hope some kind person will help that poor helpless dog and give her a home. It breaks my heart to think she’s walking around lost and hungary. Someone has to look out for the animals too. May God help everyone this is very sad.

A picture is worth a thousand words, as the old saying goes and this one breaks my heart.

Maryann, thanks for stopping by with your kind words. This is indeed a terrible tragedy that impacts all living things in that area. I can’t begin to imagine the pain and horror of the people and animals right now – so very sad

It saddens me a great deal to learn of tragedies such as this one. So many lives lost. And, to see this grieving dog sitting by her owner’s grave is heartwrenching. My hope is that someone kind and loving is now with this dog to give her the attention and compassion that this dog so desperately needs. If such is not the case, I would like to pay for all expenses in re-locating the dog to the U.S. where I could give her a wonderful home. To anyone who may be “out there” who knows about this dog, please let me know.

    Thank you.
